july 2011 glossy box

Been wanting to add my two cents on Glossy Box for a while now. However, I only just got my first Glossy Box this month so I didnt talk too much on it beforehand. I was skeptical that they might be a one trick pony, and I think the second box fiasco probably was a bit of a step in the wrong direction for them, but I was still interested and wanted to get my hands on a box. I'd actually paid for my box way back in May but for some reason (thank the lord with hindsight!) it skipped last month and ended up getting the July box. For me this month is a big thumbs up! The contents do vary as some people also got Xen Tan stuff and some other things. However I'm satisfied with all my bits, nothing is stuff I wouldn't use or liked to have tried so there are no problems with that!

Would I recommend Glossy Box? Depends how you look at it. Fist box, good, second box meh, third box good. Yeah its a bit up and down, and the price is increasing to £12.95 but I personally would pay that. I like samples and trying new things, I don't generally buy alot of makeup or skincare apart from mascara and foundation so its nice to get some random bits each month. I think the price is good considering I know alot of people spend more than a tenner a month on products they dont like or simply just use once!

I think people got a little OTT last month bashing the box, I did feel really sorry for them in the end as some people went as far to claim they were "on drugs" and how awful they were.  I think OK they messed up, it was their second box though, I think with new companies, especially ones that are sending random samples paired with the fact I think everyone thought they were going to get a full sized Nars product didnt help. SAMPLES being the operative word, I do think they need to stop sending fullsize products out because its going to give people the wrong idea! Also add in their little price increase announcement faux pas, They ended up with a ton of bad press. I think people expected a little too much, but like the Birch Box & other US equivalents they seem to vary in quality too.

In short I will continue to sub to Glossy Box in the future for sure. However I've ordered the Boudoir Prive box which I think comes in August, so we shall see how it compares!

Like over 9000 different people in the blogasphere that will be posting about this, but I like offering my thoughts on things like this because its something I'm genuinely interested in. I think the social media elements of this whole Beauty/Sample Box phenomenon is really interesting. As I think that plays a big part in the reaction to beauty boxes that are out there.

Unlike Glossy Box, I think Boudoir Prive could genuinely survive in a "real" world rather than the blogging one. Us Bloggers are fickle and shallow people who like brand names. Ask anyone what sort of samples they'd like in a beauty box and Im sure most of them would say MAC, NARS, Bobbi Brown, Laura Mercier... You know high end stuff that you would find in most department stores. Brands that most people would buy if they had the money.

Boudior Prive is certainally luxury, The samples arent that cheap. Mainly exclusive-high end brands that I think alot of people wouldn't have heard of before. I think the general public would more likely be taken with the things in this box, than bloggers. I think generally the general public might not really care about brand names and just like that little touch of luxury each month.

I dont think that Glossy Box and Boudoir Prive will be doing some one-up-man-ship over the next few months as I do think that they are different in their own ways. Boudoir Prive seems a little more thought out, where as Glossy Box seems a bit month to month. Like Glossy seem to have no long term plan in what's going in boxes, which can make it feel a little thrown together. Like last months box had 2 full size products, which seems slightly silly for a box that is labeled as a "sample box"!

I think a fair few people who got the Boudoir Prive box were expecting a Glossy 2.0 stylee first box. Something high-end, full size from a well known brand. I can see why people are disappointed but not everything is aimed at our age range and at bloggers. This months Glossy Box was ok in my opinion. The Ahava body lotion and the Rebel Nail Wraps are going into my "presents for others box" because they really aren't for me. I hate the way nail wraps look, and I'm not one for body lotion. But I do know that some other people in my family would like them so I'll pass them on for stocking fillers at Christmas!

I had the pleasure of meeting Daniel Sandler at the Boots event to I went to on Thursday so Im looking forward to trying the mascara out. I wont open it till my current one runs out though because I dont want it to dry out! The KMS California Hair Stay feels SO weird, literally like really cold really thick but crackly goopy kind weirdness! So hard to explain but its seriously the weirdest thing I've ever touched. Not tried it yet but I'll wash my hair tonight and give it a whirl. I also quite interested in the Murad Time Release Cleanser, I dont really have bad skin so Acne isnt a problem for me, but I'd rather be preventative than do nothing!

Glossy Box goes up next month and I'm in two minds about keeping going. I am going to a Glossy Box Event on September 1st and I'm interested to know where they are heading. Like I said in my Boudoir Prive post it all seems a bit up and down, Once again people are bashing it (no well known brands maybe?) The fickleness of bloggers really plays such a part in the successfulness (sp?) of these sorts of boxes!

The theme of this months Glossy Box is "5 Future Classics". I never really read the Glossy Box cards but I was quite intrigued when I saw that it was what they thought are going to be the new beauty classics. I think we are all always looking for the next ~Holy Grail~ products, so was interested to see what other consider the new classics. Think alot of people already know the Glossy Box concept by now, 5 high end samples (mainly full size/sample mixes though) for £10 (+£2.95 postage) delivered to your door.

The HD Brows kit is the actual bomb, which I've been eyeing up for a while after seeing a few people rave about HD Brows online. Anything that is to do with eyebrows I cant get enough of. The colours are great and since I recieved this (was sent the box early) I've been using the kit every single day. I've been wanting to try Mythic Oil for a while too, after seeing it on another blog a while ago. My hair is always in need of a good treatment and its really helped with the texture of my hair. I also have a secret obsession with eye cream so thats another plus for me. The fact oil is something I'm willing to try but I get so paranoid about trying stuff on my face! I know there will be grumbles about the perfume sample, But I think it smells alright actually, and even though its "something you could get free in a department store" when paired with the rest of the box I think very fair item in the box!

The beauty of this months Glossy Box is its all stuff I would actually use or would at least try, compared to a couple of items in previous boxes I probably wouldn't use and would simply pass on. I guess that's the luck of the draw with random sample box things like this.

ADDITIONAL Explanation: This is a sponsored post, However, I am still subscribed to Glossy Box, I had hoped I'd be sent one I'd "paid" (no payment was taken for the box, just lack of a better phrase) for as well as a gifted one I got for attending their event/writing this post. I wasnt sent the subscription box despite actually wanting it, so basically I just got the free box, and without asking if I wanted both the paid for box and a free one. I do think its a touch unfair as I have no qualms about actually paying for this box, I know alot of bloggers who arent subscribed do get gifted these boxes purely to post about. Boudoir Prive September Box came to my door yesterday, I think this months box was extremely late as they normally come around the same week as the Glossy Boxes. It doesn't personally bother me that it was late, but I do think it should come at the same time each month rather than randomly throughout the month! However, I think it was worth the wait though, I personally really like this box. I dont know why but compared to the Glossy Box it just feels really Luxe. When I opened it I immediately wanted to take a photo (but my camera was out of batter!) it just looked so nice and well presented!

This month the box contained six samples and a extra item, none of the items were full size, just true sample sizes. I love the Zoya polish and the Zoya nail swatch plate, I think it just added something a little special to the package. The colour is something I dont currently own either which was a plus. Really interested in using the Macadamia hair oil as well as Im suffering with extreme frizzyness at the moment for some unknown reason, been trying alot of hair oils but nothing I likes really stood out yet! Another eye cream to add to my eye cream collection, but apparently this ones used by Kate Middleton! Plus it retails for £90! Not so fussed on the silver liner as I cant wear things on my lower lashline as I have really irritable eyes, Will be passing that onto my sister! As for the Tropic Body Scrub its something that smells LUSH and cant wait to use it! The perfume sample is OK, Not to my personal perfume taste! But I will probably pop it in my bag for a night out!

Overall I really like the items, but I still havent decided which box to keep subscribed too, I like them both. I like the fancyness of the Boudoir Prive one but then I also like the amount of stuff that you get from Glossy Boxes. Boudoir Prive is definitely more sample sized bits compared to Glossy Box. Depends what your really looking for in a beauty box! Im still unsure which I prefer!

carmine box october 2011

Carmine Box is another yet another sample box (YAWN, IKR), I mentioned it in yesterdays post about the Feel Unique Beauty Box. I found it via someones blog a few days ago and then automatically signed up purely to see what may come. The Carmine box is priced at £10 plus £2.95 postage, which is the same price as a Glossy Box.

To be honest, Im not impressed by it at all. First off I don't like the packaging I think its too big in relation to the contents, I dont like the colour scheme or the logo either. This is probably just my personal taste and graphic design snobbery coming through. Moving on from the way the box actually looks, The contents aren't to my personal taste either. Hand cream is something I like having but hardly use, just tends to be something I chuck into my bag. Although my nails need repairing, I know this isn't gonna be something Id bother with as I use fake nails so much I dont really give my nails time to breathe and fix. I'm sure I'll use the Caudalie moisturizer but another sample came with my Feel Unique Beauty Box and I already use a Caudalie face cream which I really like. The blush is OK, its a safe universal colour and applies nicely. I do however love the Daniel Sandler eyeshadow too as its a very "me" colour being a peachy gold shimmer. I just dont love anything or really interested in trying any of the items.

Although its got two makeup samples in this box (Id love to see a totally makeup focused beauty box!), the rest of the items just don't wow me! I'm going to cancel the subscription for the Carmine Box. Its just not doing it for me at all, seems very lackluster compared to the other boxes I've received in the past. I think I have a fear of missing something with sample boxes so just sign up to them willy-nilly. Cant really afford to be shelling out for all of them on a monthly basis. I don't mind trying a new box or sampling just one month (most you can cancel on a month to month basis!) just to see the contents every now and again. Im not dissapointed, because I've just realised its not for me. Like with all of the sample boxes its a risk!I still need to decide between Glossy Box & Boudoir Prive! If anyone has any other brands doing boxes let me know!

After my usual casual rage towards my terrible postman I finally got my hands on this months Glossy Box. Already read the spoilers so I knew what was coming! I do like the products in this month Box. I desperately want to try Dermalogica after getting some amazing stuff last year at Fashion Week. Not quite sure I need Anti-Age stuff at the age of 21, but I'll roll with it. The nail polish is a nice colour, I dont own any baby pinks so its one for the collection. Im excited about the Stila Smudge stick as I know alot of US gurus rave about them online, would have preferred a gold, bronze or black one. But again I'll roll with it.

I didnt really like the fact it was three (well four including the pouch) of the same brand, I think variety is key to these sorts of boxes. But I think that's why I loved last months box so much lots of different products for different uses. Compared to Septembers Glossy Box its a little bit "meh". However, Overall I do like this months box, I'll be using all of it (apart from the perfumes which are going to MMMYMLRS). Its not that exciting this month, but it pretty good in terms of products that I'd get a use out of.

I cant help but think I have enough physical boxes by now. Im not one really to worry about the environment, I try my best to be green but the amount of hairspray I use probably doesn't help. But do I really need anymore pink boxes in my bedroom! I have 6, as well as 2 Boudoir Prive ones. I know people say they can use them for other things but I'm just sayin'. I do love the packaging of Glossy Boxes, don't get me wrong and I'm probably being pernickety. I just think there is only so many pink boxes a girl can need. Sometimes wish these beauty boxes didn't have all that excess packaging!

Boudoir Prive October 2011

I love the Studio Makeup eyeliner, Eyeliner is my thing so I'm sure I'll get use out of that! Great choice for them to put black in rather than a "out there" colour as its pretty much a universally used colour. Cetuem IIlluminating mask and Creme de Lite intrigues me and Im looking forward to trying them out. The Korres Quince body butter smells DIVINE, I dont even know what Quince is but I love it! Im pretty sure its a full size product as well, which is about a fiver full size.

Leonor Greyl Huile de Palme seems interesting too, Its a pre-shampoo hair "thing" from the photo it looks like a oil but in the sample bottle it looks more like a gritty paste. The Rose & Co salve is perfect for this time of year when it goes chilly and things start getting chapped, I dont really like Rose scented things, so I think I'll be passing it on. Useful product though! Perfume isnt my thing, so it will go with the rest of my samples to go to Give and Makeup.

Honestly, I was thinking of unsubscribing to Boudoir Prive and keeping Glossy Box and Feel Unique. Although I prefer the luxe element of the box. ie: unknown, foreign, new and expensive brands. I just feel like its not "right" for me, but at the same time I wasnt so thrilled with Glossy Box this month. Out of all the sample boxes I got this month I prefer the Feel Unique Beauty Box one. Its the cheapest and most "reliable". But as we all know these beauty boxes are wholly unreliable! Next month I'm definitely cutting down boxes. Now I have to decide which!
