"I really love your blog, I read it every day! Just wondering if you could share any good blogging tips? I love to write my blog and have done for 2 months but have no followers ha! how did you make people aware of your blog?"
This is a question I get asked far too much. I think some people think that there is some secret way to get your blog popular or to get people to follow you. In all honesty there isn't a simple "do this, do that" method to get your blog big. It takes alot of effort and time to get a blog going and make it successful. Making people aware of your blog is something that takes practice, time and a little empathizing from the view of your prospective followers.
You cant simply expect to start a blog, and then get like 5 followers overnight, I didn't have followers for weeks, hey even months after starting mine! I think people put too much emphasis on having people read their blog, Does it REALLY matter if people do or not? Surely you should just see as a chance to explore and work out what your blogs really about and practice writing so that when you do have readers, they have something a little coherent to read!
Let me start by saying, I didn't actually do much promotion when it comes to LLYMLRS in the beginning. All I did was upload my drawings to to Flickr and link back to my blog in the description box. I would put all my drawings in the appropriate "pools" and just see what happened. I was getting like 30-50 hits a day from doing this. My first "big break" in terms of blog traffic was when I started to upload my Alpha Beta Hand Drawn Type series. This was posted all over Tumblr and some of the letters were posted on We Love Typography, where I still get link backs to my Flickr to this day. In January I started doing outfit photographs, which in my inital plans for the blog, were always something that I wanted to do. People ask me this alot "why did you stop doing art stuff!", It was purely and probably a little selfishly done because THAT bought in more traffic to my blog.
One thing I've never done, and something that I highly dislike is when people comment blogs with their URL ie: SPAM! Ok, I guess in some ways people think that its a great way to promote yourself. Wrong, I can honestly say most of the time I never click on the link. If I want to view someones blog, I'll go through their name in the comments. I often click onto peoples blogs that leave comments with substance, people who show they actually read my post and a say a bit more than "love your blog, heres mine! plzfollowmyblog.blogspot.com". Also, I hate when I get emailled asking if I will post a link about their blog on mine, Most of the time I don't respond to these emails because I think they are really rude, If I want to post about someones blog, I will do on my own free will. Im happy to promote blogs Im intrested in, or contests that I like.
Sometimes I get emails from people asking me if I'd post about their blog on mine, I honestly think this is one of the worst and rudest things you can do as a prospective blogger. Why would I do a whole post deidcated to someone if the asked me to? Its not just one person who asks me this, I get probably 3-5 emails a week asking this. Im happy to check your blog out if you do email me, But if you ASK me to post about you so you can piggyback off my hard earned traffic then your seriously deluded.
