When I heard that Lou Teasdale - sleb MUA and Hair icon and Harry Styles bezzo - was releasing a book I was quite interested to see what she’d come up with. The Craft is marked as an “alternative" look at beauty. It has a real hipster/tumblr feel to it, with tons of cool look grungy girls with a huge nod to the 90’s and zine culture.
The look’s in the book are for the most part what I would consider pretty edgy/grungy. Including lot of bright colours, smudged makeup and how spider lashes should be in. She talks about a ton of products which are a nice addition to the book as it’s always nice to know what MUA’s use. The strongest part of the book is the hair tutorials, especially Lou’s advice on hair dye and chalking. I do think that’s her strong point, but it barely touched the surface. I wish there were a few more ways to create cool hair looks with an alternative vibe. I especially like the tutorials on the Bjork inspired non briesmaid updo. Im going to have to give that one a go myself!
I do feel like about 70% of the book is incredibly beginner in terms of beauty advice. It’s kinda like a Fisher Price alt girls guide to beauty, very basic. But then again there isn’t really anything out there for the punkier, grungier gals like this. While The Craft boasts 25 Alternative beauty looks, but some of them are just advice and tips. For example there's a page on how to fake tan and another on how to contour and a section on becoming a MUA… While great help, it’d been nice to see something more focused on the crazier fun beauty looks as I think there is such a gap in the market for this.
Although it sounds like I'm criticising the book, I do think visually it’s quite nice, quirky and has some decent tips. The content that's there is good, I just think it could be a little better. The Craft is the kinda book you’d see in Urban Outfitters, get as a gift and read once or twice and draw a bit of inspiration from. At £9.99 it'd make a good gift for a friend, but it isn't quite as good as it could be I think.
