summer beauty basics

review swatch photo

get naked

In the summer, it’s time to amp up the skincare and try and skip the foundation. Stick with concealer on the darker spots, shadows and blemishes and add a light dusting of powder. This will keep your skin looking fresh and matte. I'd recommend Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer - it's budget friendly and stays put for 16 hours. If you are really worried about going foundation free then invest in a decent tinted moisturiser. Try and pick one that will protect and enhance the skin at the same time.

Bronzed Goddess

Finding a good summer bronzer is a must. I like ones that have peachy undertone to really enhance a natural tan and add warmth to the skin. My favourite bronzer at the moment is the Clarins Summer Bronzer. It’s a huge compact which can be used all over the body. Check out my blog post on the Bronzing basics if you want to know more.

Keep it Glowing

To keep your skin glowing add a touch of liquid highlighter to the face. It’s hard to get the balance between highlighted and oily so this might take a bit of practice. Always start with less and add more as you go along. My pick is Revlon Skinlights - these come in a variety of shades to suit all skin tones and gives the skin a lovely lit from within glow. Pat this wherever the light will naturally hit your face - Tops of the cheekbones, brow bone and down the bridge of the nose.

Locked and Coated

Hayfever sufferers will rejoice at the thought of waterproof mascara! The Bare Minerals Locked and Coated is a mascara topcoat which will turn any mascara instantly waterproof. A must for anyone trying to avoid dreaded racoon eyes.

Brighten Up

Summer is the perfect time to experiment with brighter makeup. But if you're daunted by the idea of bright makeup then go for a neon lip. Brighter shades work so well with tans to really make the skin pop. Orange is so on trend this season so I’d suggest the Illamasqua Matte Lip Liquid in Exotic. A stunning bright orange which will suit all skin tones.

waterproof any mascara!

Bare Minerals Locked & Coated review swatch photo
Bare Minerals Locked & Coated review swatch photo

I’ve actually had this product for a long time but never got round to using it. Mainly because I never actually read the label to see what it was. I thought it was just a plain ol' mascara and I didn’t want to have too many open at one time. After a closer look I saw that it was a mascara top coat. Bare Minerals Locked & Coated is a lash topcoat that’ll make your favourite mascara completely waterproof. This comes in handy for those who want to use their favourite mascara but it doesn’t have a waterproof option. It’s a transparent gel which doesn’t weigh down the lashes or clump them together. Then your mascara will stay in place all day with no smudging to movement. It’s also surprisingly inexpensive at only £11. Of course you can go with a waterproof mascara and call it a day but I do think it’s a handy item to have in your makeup bag.

Yesterday I uploaded my final Sheer Blonde Summer of Sun episode! I'm actually quite sad now that it's all over as I've really been enjoying experimenting with my hair and trying new things out. As someone who is stuck in a rut about their hair having a few go-to hairstyles in my arsenal is never a bad thing. Above you can watch my final video as well as hear my final thoughts on the Sheer blonde Range I've been trialling over the past few weeks. Let me know what you think!

As always John Frieda are giving away a bunch of Summer themed goodies for each hair style that I’m doing. You can enter over on their Facebook Page!

how to stop biting your nails

how to stop biting your nails review swatch photo

I bite my nails - I have done for as long as I can remember. I also have a nasty habit of picking the skin around my nails whenever I’m feeling nervous. I hate it, absolutely hate it. It’s one of those things where I wish I could stop but I just cant. I’ve tried and tried but nothing has helped. Today I thought I’d talk you through some methods that might work for you!

Fake Nails

Acrylic nails and I have a love hate relationship. I love having them but hate that they make my nails weak. If you did want to use fake nails then I recommend press on’s as you can get some pretty good press on’s these days. Opt for the sticky tabbed backed ones rather than glue on ones so that the nail isn’t being damaged.

Gel Manicure

I’ve had one gel manicure before and I really liked it. It did stop me nibbling my nails but they were incredibly tempting to pick off once they started to grow out. Gel manicures keep the nails strong, hard and perfect looking. They can be pretty pricey too but they do look so good.

Nasty Nail Polish

I remember my mum dipping my fingers in those god-awful tasting pots that make your nails taste horrible. These days you can get special nail polishes that have that horrible taste. Every time you go to nibble a nail you’ll be presented with that disgusting bitter taste.

Tell yourself No

Try to stop for a second before biting your nails and think about what you are doing. Identify the triggers that are causing you to bite your nails. Pay attention to the things that make you want to bite your nails and try and avoid them as much as you can. Once you figure out whats causing it then it’s a starting point to start dealing with it.

While I feel like it’s impossible to quit I hope that at least one person might be helped with the methods that I’ve tried over the years!

Facial SPF's to try

best spf's for summer review swatch photo
You should in theory wear SPF all year round but I'm one of those people that only reaches for it when the sun shines. I know - I deserve a smack on the wrist. But I am trying.  Today I thought I'd share my two favourites of the moment which have been been making their way into daily rotation over the past few weeks!

I’m sure I’ve been harping on and on about this Benefit Dream Screen for weeks now but it really is outstanding. As someone who hates the feeling of oily, greasy, sticky SPF this has been a life saver. It smooths my skin and keeps oiliness at bay. I also like to pat this on the face on top of makeup whenever my skin needs a SPF top up. The other product I've been enjoying is the Estee Lauder DayWear Advanced Anti-Oxidant & UV Defense SPF 50 is a complex anti oxidant skin protecting cream. It protects the skin, keeps it smooth, comfortable and has SPF 50. This is a little more like a traditional sunscreen compared to the Benefit one. It sinks into the skin quickly and easily. All while feeling light and matte on the skin.

Naked Skin

urban decay naked skin bronzing illuminating beauty balm review swatch photo
urban decay naked skin bronzing illuminating beauty balm review swatch photo

Urban Decay have added  new products to their popular Naked Skin BB line in the form of two new mixing Naked Skin Beauty Balms. One is illuminating and the other is bronzing. The Naked Skin Beauty Balms give a soft focus blurred finish on the skin, make the pores look smaller and even out the skintone. They have a gel like texture which applies easily and gives a dewy natural finish. Neither are particularly shimmery or sparkly, just sort of "lit from within".  Very pretty and glowing. I found that the coverage wasnt quite there (It's worth noting they are designed to be mixed with the Naked Skin BB Creams or your foundations) but they do even the skin out. Think of them like a primer before adding your summer base pick. I've worn the bronzing base above mixed with a little Nars Sheer Glow a few dabs of concealer and some powder. Great mixers to create a lovely summery base.

I. AM. SO. SICK. OF. LIP. PENCILS. Literally, if another one “lands on my desk” then I think I might give up on life. Okay maybe not but still - Im so bored of them by now. Next beauty trend please?

Regardless Collection have launched a collection of lip butter come chubby lip pencils which are launching sometime soon. The formula is creamy and buttery - they feel comfortable on the lips. They have a glossy sheen which is very pretty. I really like the shade 2 Cappuccino which is a brownish nude shade. It’s super flattering on the skin and has a 90’s vibe about it which I really enjoy. The other shades are similar to a lot of other things out there, a bright pink, a neutral pink and a dark plummy shade. The plum shade would be a nice budget friendly lip for the winter.

I dont actually know when these come out but I presume in the next few months! It's from Collection so I reckon they'll be a purse friendly price... probably in the £3-£4 price bracket!

Clarins Instant Light Base dupe

Clarins Instant Light Radiance Boosting Complexion Base dupe

Hot of the heels of my latest Clarins dupe post I’ve found another drugstore version of one of my favourite Clarins products. The Seventeen Wow Skin Tan Liquid Glow is a near perfect dupe for theInstant Light Radiance Boosting Complexion Base. The Clarins Instant Light Radiance Boosting Complexion Base in shade 03 was part of the summer drop from the brand as has quickly become a firm favourite in my Muji tower.

It’s a lightweight base that boosts the completion for that much desirable model glow from within look. It leaves a glowy but flawless look to the skin all the while hydrating and soothing the skin. On a usual trot around Boots I picked the Seventeen Wow Skin Tan Liquid Glow to see how it compared and if it’d be a little more purse friendly. Much to my surprise it’s very similar. It gives the faux glow effect but adding a bit more of a tan to the skin. Use it alone on good skin days or mixed with your favourite foundation or dabbed onto the tops of the cheeks like a liquid highlighter.

At a budget friendly £5.99 this is one of those summer products you can’t afford to miss. Big purse friendly thumbs up from me!
