Support (or lack there of) is a word that's thrown around a lot in the fashion and beauty blogging community. We should support each other, we should help each other and should really try and make the community a better place. I think it's VERY easy to get stuck in the "me me me" culture of blogging. Throughout my time blogging I've been stuck both in the "I share and support loads but got nowhere" and the "I want everyone to show me support (but not really doing enough myself)" camp. The feeling of a "sisterhood" is something we shouldn't expect from the community but come as standard.
Lack of support is a whole community issue not just a "size" issue. Big Blogger/Small Blogger as a tag line that throws me into a mini rage… personally I think by labelling yourself as a "small" blogger you’re making it sound as if you are less than bigger bloggers - which you are not. It also makes it sound like you’re saying you are not good enough, which again is not true. Numbers are the kryptonite of the blogging world - Try not to fall into that trap. We're all in this together no matter how many followers we have on that silly little widget on the side of our blog.
A bit of drama went down in the community yesterday which triggered a out pour of overwhelming positivity and blog love. It’s funny how the darker moments within out community moments draw out and embrace the positives. Today I thought I’d share some of my ways on how as community we can show our support to other each other and hopefully make the community a little brighter day to day rather than every once in a while.
- COMMENT: Little things like commenting and responding make a HUGE difference to how you and your community feel. Even now after blogging for five years (yup - it’s been five years) I still read every single one of my comments across all platforms. All bloggers read their comments - no matter how many they get. We all crave that feedback! Never underestimate the power of a comment, sometimes I get comments that put a huge smile on my face and ones that stick with me all day. Remember how much effect your words can have on the way someone feels.
- ASk, ANSWER and thank: Asking for help is something I think a lot of people shy away from, because they are embarrassed or worried about looking dumb. That ol' saying "theres no such thing as a stupid question" still stands today. And on the opposite side while sometimes it's easy to come back with the answer “just google it” it’s not always the best way to help someone else out. Obviously you might not have time to go into detail or even know the answer but little questions like "What camera do you use?" or "Where is X from?" are quick and simple answers - you can reply in seconds and it will really help that other person out. And say thank you when they do reply!
- link back: Seen a item on another blogger you like? Bought a product off another ones recommendation? Got inspired by someone else's post? Link back to the blogger and let them know your thoughts! I love knowing what people think of products I've recommended or talked about and seeing link backs on my Google Analytics or Twitter @'s always prompts me to take a peek. It's great knowing other peoples feelings on different topics and products.
- Share: If you see a post you really love and want share with your community then go ahead and do it! I dont know why people shy away from this so much. While it'd be ridiculously hard to share every single thing you enjoy online but once a week or twice a week is a great place to start. Another fab way is to round up your favourite blogs/items/posts of the week/month/whenever - It's a fun and friendly way to share love and they might even link you back.
- Collaborate: Collaborating within the blogging community seems to be something we haven't quite grasped fully yet. Youtuber's realised a few years ago that the best way to grow is to collaborate with one another. Sharing audiences is a simple but effective way to grow your own. An idea might be to do a joint posts with another blogger or even guest post on other persons blog. Swap stories, share two different opinions and or take on a themes with another bloggers. There are so many ways to collaborate with another blogger and I really hope as a community we take this a step further!
While I'll freely admit that Im not quite "there" in terms of showing total blog love. I know I could do SO much more with the network I have behind me and from now on I pledge to do so. I'm going to make a conscious effort to reply more, comment more and most importantly share more new and exciting posts with my community.
Frankly though - try not to get annoyed or disheartened when others don't help out as much as they could do. Making little steps to being more positive with your outlook on blogging rather than feeling disheartened by it all is the first step on the ladder to building a supportive base. I think we should give a little love and hope it comes back to you. Every positive action as a reward.
IT'S ME! XX
ReplyDeleteThis is a great post! Share the love!!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a good post :) I always love reading your blog, it's not always about 'ooo! Look at the outfit I am wearing!!' which can get representative on some blogs; you always have an opinion to express, which is rare I think in blogging. Good job :)
ReplyDeletehttp://champagnelifestyleteabudget.blogspot.co.uk/
Im glad people get my opinionated posts. Im probably more outspoken regarding community issues than other bloggers - I know a lot keep themselves to themselves or discuss in private!
DeleteSuch a great post, I think it's easy to feel quite alone in the blogging world if you're new and every comment means the world to me so I always make sure to leave a comment telling people if I have enjoyed their post etc! Love your blog XO

It's so so nice to see all this positivity after yesterday! Love this xx
ReplyDeleteSuch a great post and I totally agree - there's nothing I love more than getting a nice tweet or comment and yet I can be guilty of not doing it enough. We're all a bunch of people who share a passion or two and we should embrace that! So on that note - I rly like your hair just now it looks fit <3

ReplyDeleteTHAT FASHION VICTIM // UK FASHION & BEAUTY BLOG
Great post, but I find most of the 'popular' bloggers never answer comments/questions. But I think everyone needs to be more kind.
ReplyDeleteWhile it may be true for some, the majority of bloggers I see do reply as much as they can. I think you have to appreciate the volume of comments/questions the super "popular" bloggers get. People like Zoella/Tanya Burr just couldnt physically reply to all their messages if they sat at their computer all day. I think the key is not to take it personally or take offense by it all. I think being kinder to "more known" bloggers is as equally as important as the so called "smaller" ones. Some people are pretty harsh on them and tar everyone with the same brush.
DeleteI may not have put that as perfect as I could have. I know there are popular bloggers that get 100s and 100s of comments and can fully understand that not everyone will get a response. But there are some bloggers you can ask a simple what lipstick is that/where is that top from etc and get nothing back from. Sometimes I think the blog should go both ways, if you allow comments, and often ask a question at the end, I only seems right to make so e effort to answer a few. I must say I don't mean you when I say this, I know you do reply often, particularly on YouTube, but it's sometimes disappointing not to receive a reply. Not meaning as any kind of meanness here!
DeleteOh no I totally see your point and it's very true how it can be frustrating. Especially when you really want to know where someones top is from and then they just don't reply! I do agree blogging is both ways for sure!
DeleteSuch a lovely post, your blog is one of my favourites!

Such a good post, and all very true. One of the best things about blogging is just being able to interact with others who have the same interests and want to talk about the same things whether it's a new brand, lipstick or camera. It's lovely seeing little friendships blossom! Also I think it's so much nicer to give/receive a personalised comment on a post rather than a generic comment if you see what I mean. :)

You've made such a good point. I find all blogger are all for positivity and community, but sometimes we get wrapped up in our own little bubble on the internet and forget that we are a community. I definitely think this post has reminded a lot of us - definitely me - that we've gotta give what we take here! Feeling lots of big blog love right now! *virtual hugs*

ReplyDeleterandom but when you used to link a couple of blogs you've been liking recently at the end of a blog post, you once posted mine and i got such a huge traffic boost and it was so awesome (can i admit that?) because i was in a WHATS THE POINT OF THIS phase. then i was pulled out my funk! i'm still grateful for that! thanks gurl
ReplyDeleteawww this makes me so happy! Im currently pulling together links for a share the love post now so Im definitely going to start doing more link back style thing (:
DeleteThis post is so inspiring! Your blog was one of the first blogs I ever started to read and I've finally took the plunge and started my own! People shouldn't just focus on numbers it should be about writing about what you love and making friends along the way that share your interests xo
ReplyDeleteSuch a good post Lily. I think we're all guilty of getting into the habit of forgetting we need to give back and not just expect all the love to come to us. Definitely going to make sure I actively support other bloggers as much as I can! xx
ReplyDeleteI love this post so much. What you've said, what it stands for and how it makes me feel. I'm so inspired by this post, and I hope everyone else reading it is too. x
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love getting comments on my blog but I also love commenting on other peoples' blogs. Especially when the person whose blog you are commenting also visits your blog a lot - it's like a friendship forming. I love how this is such a friendly community (mostly) and I love to support other blogs I enjoy reading.
ReplyDeletebeckyisobel.blogspot.co.uk
THIS! It's funny because I was having this same discussion with a blogger mate of mine yesterday about the blogging community and how like you said - some bloggers are all about themselves but there are those that pay it forward. I feel that the whole "community" vibe has diminished a bit but I think if we all make the effort and band together it can be how it used to be, before some got wrapped up in "popularity" and numbers. Great post Lily :)
ReplyDeleteit's great seeing bloggers i love write these affirming posts, it really shows great passion for blogging. I'd love to be able to collab with more people as i love photography and want to help expand my audience, it's difficult but i'm working hard to get my work noticed more :) i agree that we can do more, there is a lot of 'i want to do that' but never do, and i think the events of this week might change it

I love this post, it's actually very inspiring. I never knew realised the power of bloggers until I started interning at big name mags and saw the journos there scoping out different people's blogs. I'm not going to lie, yours was one of the first blogs I ever read that inspired me to start blogging (after that passion for fashion competition?) It'll be my blogs first birthday next week and I have had so much fun with it. It's hard doing it alongside my full-time degree but so worth it when you get a nice comment, or someone in the 'outside world' saying they read something on your blog.
ReplyDeleteExtremely satisfying! Well done for the inspo post!

I love that you have offered practical tips on how to improve the community spirit in blogging. Rather than just comment on the state of affairs or express your feelings, you have thought about really useful ways to help one another. I think that's rad!
ReplyDeleteI've been reading your blog since 2010/2011 and it's been really great to watch how you've grown and developed as a blogger.
This is exactly the kind of spirit I'm trying to build with Blognix. A space where bloggers can be positive and encouraging. Because the blogosphere really is filled with some inspiring people.
Nicely put indeed Lily!

This post is exactly spot on ! You have hit the nail on the head. I think we all expect a lot more than we are willing to give - I think this post will open up a lot of peoples eyes. Great post!
ReplyDeleteWas thinking today that it doesn't seem people comment as much anymore and a little comment is always nice to read!

This post is so great Lily!! I've started a series on my blog about different bloggers that i'm loving at the moment - even if they're "bigger" bloggers, it's still worth your while showing appreciation - it can make someone's day! and i think it's interesting to see what kind of blogs everyone enjoys - you can discover so many new bloggers through just talking to different people! i do agree with you too on the whole 'popular' bloggers not being able to reply to all their comments, and that's fair enough, especially when a large majority aren't actual questions to respond to. but it would be nice to see more of an effort to interact on their part. one reply to one comment/question is better than just ignoring them all. i think people are reasonable enough in that we know that not everyone can reply to everything, or check out everyone's blog! :)
ReplyDeletexxx
http://eleanorcos.blogspot.com/
I dont think anyone "ignores them all". I often see people reply to the first X amount of comments and even though they might not be able to reply to everything I bet they read them all. Speaking from my own experiences when i get a lot of comments. I often feel overwhelmed and have that feeling of anxiety about knowing where to start and worry about leaving people out. I also feel those with bigger audiences (especially the youtubers) do things like meet ups and live shows like that so they can connect on a personal level with their viewers... who arent necessarily bloggers/vloggers and are just fans of what they do. it's a really interesting subject actually and I might do another post on my thoughts on interactions! Thanks for the food for thought!
DeleteGreat post! It's lovely to see bloggers supporting each other and sharing content! :)

What a beautiful and positive post! I really enjoyed reading this!
ReplyDeleteAs a beginning blogger I sometimes get discouraged about blogging now and then... But more and more often people I know come up to me and tell me they really enjoy reading my blog, like my outfits or tried one of my recipes. That really makes me so happy! I also try to remind myself that i started blogging for me and my own personal expression... Not for the approval of others.
Thank you for the lovely post!

This was such a great post! One of my favorite things about your blog is that you answer the questions people ask without being mean or snarky — even if it is something that you mentioned in the main post or have said 10,000 times.
ReplyDeletei admit sometimes when im feeling huffy those questions do make me roll my eyes for example when im asked where something is from on instagram even though i tagged it or someone has already mentioned it but i try just to answer things where I can and when it's needed (:
DeleteThis really resonated with me. It wasn't until I started reading your blog that I really got interested and invested in this sort of thing, and you inspired me to start my own blog which I've just recently started. Thank you Lily, your message is very important and really great to see :)

This was great! I don't know what it is, but most of the blogs I read today had something to do with the whole "be kind and radiate positivity" message. It's a nice refresher and a big eye opener into what bloggers could be doing to form better relationships with the reader and other bloggers as well. I'll be sure to read more of your posts!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great post, Lily. & I think it's really great that someone who is as influential as you are takes the time to write these thoughts out. You were one of the first blogs I started reading years ago & right after I started my own blog, I remember you shared one of my photos on a sort of 'monthly favorites' post you used to do of other bloggers. Which ended up giving me like, a ton of page views & new followers & I was so appreciative. I've always kept that in the back of my head & have tried do the same with 'blog crush' posts linking to other blogs & I know they appreciate it & it's good to spread the love around. Anyway, blah blah blah.. I've always thought that blogging should feel like a community rather than a competition & good for you for this post!
ReplyDeleteStacey x
Fantastic post! I always enjoy reading your content and I think it's really true about what you have said in this post. Everyone should be regarded as equal, we should all work together, because we are a community!
ReplyDeleteI totally agree! Although I have a fairly small follower count (despite being a longer-term blogger) I still really enjoy doing guest posts and showing love and support to my other bloggers out there. I think the biggest part that all of us bloggers need to keep in mind is that we are all at the end of the day just single people. As a one person it doesn't seem like we can cause a positive impact but lots of individuals spreading love and support will make a huge difference!
ReplyDeleteOn a side note I've really been enjoying these kinds of posts from you lately as we don't always get to read a long conversation type post from you. Love your blog :)

I really appreciate this post right now. I just launched my blog that I have put so much work into the past few months and it's such a struggle to get it out there. I hate the idea of bothering anyone with trying to link my blog. I don't want anyone to ever feel like I'm spamming their hard work. But it's nice to have someone phrase it like you do - that we are a community and we should support each other. Thank you for that.
ReplyDeleteWith that said I hope you don't mind me posting my blog in the hopes of anyone enjoying it :)

ReplyDeleteYour right its not a numbers game that's not why we do this, is it?
Yeah its great to get a reply but at the end of the day its not end of the world if you don't, like yourself some bloggers get SO many replies it would take them days to just try and reply to each and everyone individually!!
Ultimately its all about being part of the blogging community and I for one love it :)
So keep up the the good work Hun :) and carry on what you are doing xxx

I really love this post Lily. I'm totally new to blogging, and it's really daunting setting up new when there's already a world of girls (and guys!) out there who have way more knowledge and experience in blogging and have a much larger following group. It does make you feel like you may never get anything out of it... But this has given me some confidence in myself and in my blog.

ReplyDeleteSometimes, being a "small blogger" with un-pro pictures makes me sad, I even stopped blogging for 1 year, I felt like I didn't fit in the blog bubble even if I enjoyed doing this, I was kind of ashamed of it. This is perfect timing, I've just started my blog and getting it up and running is proving more difficult then I thought. Thank you so much for the fantastic advice!
ReplyDeleteGreat post - I absolutely love your blog and how real it is. I think it's so easy to get caught up in producing content that you know people will want to see on their blog feeds - hauls, positive reviews, ect - but it takes a certain amount of courage to put yourself out there and make a post which is perhaps a little more controversial. A lot of newer bloggers seem to have this idea that "success" will only come with followers, but surely success is being and doing something you're proud of. The blogging community definitely has its down moments but I feel that as a whole, it's a positive thing in which we're all more than happy to help one another and sit and chat.
ReplyDeleteThank you for all the time you put into your blog, both your fashion and beauty blog have been a huge inspiration to me, and have definitely helped me on my way when I decided to kickstart my blog up. I appreciate "the little things", the total dedication you have towards your blog and I wish you all the best for the future!

Great article, I always love too read about other bloggers experiences and tips!
ReplyDeleteI loved this post Lily. Ever since I started blogging last year I've put just as much time into reading, commenting and sharing other people's blog posts. I truly believe that you should share and celebrate things, and show appreciation to others - even if it's not being returned. I hope that sometimes when I share my favourite posts or comment, it has made someone's day. I think blogging is just as much about reading and supporting as it is about content.
ReplyDeleteAnd thank you for your statement about 'big / little bloggers'. As a relative newbie, and as someone with fewer than 200 Bloglovin' followers, sometimes I do feel inferior. And then you write something like this and I remember that as long as some people enjoy my posts, then that's ok.
Also, on a similar note, I love your blog, and all of your content, and really value your opinions. Thank you for entertaining, reassuring and inspiring me!

ReplyDeleteI actually remember two years ago, I mentioned you on twitter, I admit I fan-girled a bit, as I really didn't expect a response. It was so nice to know that you really do care about replying to your readers and stuff - that's what makes you one of my favourite bloggers (and one of the first blogs I discovered who inspired me to start my own) so thank you! :)

Great post - the twitter #bloggerswelove thing was great the other day, I found so many more amazing new blogs I had never seen before:) and it's good to share your opinion on this kinda topic. I think its great that I can talk to other bloggers online to ask them questions and stuff when in the real world I would never have the courage to approach a girl and ask her what eyeliner shes wearing etc. I think the blogging community is really amazing at times:)

Great post Lily. I've made a resolution to leave comments more often. So easy to get bogged down in the number of unread posts I have and not giving the bloggers I follow the love they deserve. x
ReplyDeleteFab post Lily! I love that you're often so honest, I think a lot of bloggers are afraid to put out their real opinions sometimes but things like this must be said! I don't even know what all the drama was as I like to stay out of it but I did see all the blog love and thought it was brilliant! I feel like blogging did kind of lose the community feel that it once had but I'm seeing a kind of revival of it lately and I love it! X

It is a lovely and truthful post! I loved your view and approach about that.

Hello there ♥
ReplyDeleteI love your blog and your opinionated post! The latter kind of post allows us to connect with you, see who you really are besides your love of fashion. I also love 'the tips about blogging' you've been giving us. It has been helping a lot so THANK YOU ♥♥

Completely agree! Loved reading this Lily!

I really liked this post! I feel like youtubers get much more love and support than bloggers get and this is a sad thing, people just don't comment that often and we don't get to see the people that read our blogs and not getting the feedback makes loose the motivation really easily. So thanks for pointing these things out :) x
ReplyDeleteAs someone who's been reading blogs for years but is just starting out as a blogger myself, it's really really nice to see a strong and supportive views on being a community! Starting out always makes you feel like an outsider and an odd comment really does motivate and could make someone's day, and I'm happy you've brought that to light. Keep it up Lily x

I agree with this post! I don't have loads of followers but I have some who return regularly and I visit their blog regularly too. But that's because I genuinely like their blog and I hope that's the reason why they come back to mine :D Some people I've met through blogging are great and I hope to meet more bloggers too.

I love this post!! I only started getting followers just over a year ago I think, when after 2 or 3 years of blogging I realised I had to put myself out there. So I started commenting on blogs that I had been reading. There's still a lot of putting myself out there that I have to do but a start is better then nothing.
ReplyDeleteGreat post, keep it up Lily!!

Oh and I'm loving your hair!!
DeleteI fully agree! I often consider my self as a small blogger, because well, I am! And it can get you down as if you'll never reach the goals you so badly crave, but if all bloggers support we can all grow!

ReplyDeleteI'm so excited my broken Marriage has been restored and my husband is back after a breakup, After 2 years of marriage, me and my husband has been into one quarrel or the other until he finally left me and moved to California to be with another woman. i felt my life was over and my kids thought they would never see their father again. i tried to be strong just for the kids but i could not control the pains that torments my heart, my heart was filled with sorrows and pains because i was really in love with my husband. Every day and night i think of him and always wish he would come back to me, I was really upset and i needed help, so i searched for help online and I came across a website that suggested that Dr Unity can help get ex back fast. Hi,
ReplyDeleteI really appreciate your inputs on my situation Dr happy and what could I do with-out you. Thank you in advance.
I was in a relationship with this guy for the past 1 and a half year.. We became close real fast and were very serious about each other… he’s German and was in the country for her internship.. he left after first 6 months and came back after a couple of months.. he said that he had come down for me.. WE started living – in.. We discussed faMILY, KIDS, future, moving to EU together.. everything was going good until of last August when I started to get jealous about his moves, I got controlling and things started to get worse.. we spoke about it a lot of times where he expressed how he felt but I was not able to understand why I was doing that.. During our discussion I would always say I did .. This February he called it off and since then I have been a mess.. I gave it a lot of thought and realised my mistakes and why I was doing it.. I tried talking to him .. begged him.. pleaded him .. but he says that he has lost all his feelings for me and would never get back to me..I was in my knees praying looking for help, them i fine a comment online how a spell caster help to restored relationship get ex lover back, ” so i decided to give a try coz i love my boyfriend so much. so i contacted Dr happy http://happyspelltemple.webs.com/ tell him all my problem and he gave me 100%guarantee that i will have my boyfriend back after the spell so i was gifted and lucky to have contacted him i did every thing he ask of me and to my greatest surprise a day after the spell my boyfriend call me and apology for what he did to me and ask for my forgiveness to come back again for me, we both are happily living together again plz Contact him urgently via.........

An amazing testimony on a spell caster who brought my wife back to me..
ReplyDeleteI'm from CANADA, I'm happily married to a lovely and caring wife, with two kids A very big problem occurred in my family seven months ago, between me and my wife so terrible that she took the case to court for a divorce she said that she never wanted to stay with me again, and that she did not love me any more So she packed out of my house and made me and my children passed through severe pain. I tried all my possible means to get her back, after much begging, but all to no avail and she confirmed it that she has made her decision, and she never wanted to see me again. So on one evening,as i was coming back from work,i met an old friend of mine who asked of my wife So i explained every thing to her,so she told me that the only way i can get my wife back,is to visit a spell caster, because it has really worked for her too So i never believed in spell, but i had no other choice, than to follow her advice. Then she gave me the email address of the spell caster whom she visited.{driayaryi2012@hotmail.com}. So the next morning,i sent a mail to the address she gave to me,and the spell caster assured me that i will get my wife back the next day what an amazing statement!! I never believed,so he spoke with me,and told me everything that i need to do. Then the next 3 days, So surprisingly, my wife who did not call me for the past {5} months gave me a call to inform me that she was coming back So Amazing!! So that was how she came back that same day, with lots of love and joy,and she apologized for her mistake, and for the pain she caused me and my children. Then from that day,our relationship was now stronger than how it were before,by the help of a spell caster . So, i will advice you out there to kindly visit the same website {driayaryi2012@hotmail.com},if you are in any condition like this,or you have any problem related to "bringing your ex back. So thanks to the Dr Iyaryi for bringing back my wife, and brought great joy to my family once again.{driayaryi2012@hotmail.com} And also Reach him on WhatsApp Number: +2349057915709 Thanks Dr. IyaryI
