Im 5ft5, I wouldn't say Im petite, (petite is 5ft4 and below, so not really!), But I find ALL dresses from highstreet shops are too long for me, and then I find petite stuff to be too short! I don't remember the last time I bought something classed as a dress from Topshop/Primark/New Look that wasn't way past my knees, and just drowns my frame. I do take alot of things up if they are too long, But its such a shame when I find lovely dresses that just cant be altered as it would ruin the shape or pattern! Funny enough when I was doing some research on this, apparently all clothes are designed to fit a woman whos 5ft5 without shoes! I'm sure alot of people will have the opposite problem to me though! Tunics being too short and dresses being perfect! I wish there was a bit more variation in hemlines!
Anyway, back to the outfit, I saw this dress on the mannequin as I walked past and knew I wanted it, I didn't realize it had the balloon sleeves until I went in store, But I figure its winter, Its not like I'm going to go out without a coat/cardigan or something over it so I can live with that! The gorgeous lacey fabric and the berry colour fit my A/W wardrobe perfectly! Teamed with my bargain-lious £1 Primark coat, and my amazing half tints from Girl Props, Perfect transitional period dressing! Also rocking my new brogues as picked by my tweeps! Im tempted to get the black ones too, But I think Im going to hold out and buy some lace up black booties with a fur cuff for winter! PS. I did change into leggings after taking these pictures ;)

Pah! For goodness sake who cares if you wear a top as a dress, you're petite!
ReplyDeleteI love that dress, and with the brogues it's lovely!
xx
This is a fab outfit and "The top" looks better as a dress!
ReplyDeleteCant believe that jacket was £1 _ bargain.
I love Brogues .. everything works xx
you're so right with the dress/tunic/top thing. You wear your whatever tops/tunics right. I always love your outfits. They're simple, cute and you put your clothes together very well.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous users talk shit. Most of the time.
Oh I love the colour of this dress!
ReplyDeleteI have that topshop tunic in black and I wear it as a dress with thick tights. And I'm 5ft6/7 (not entirely sure but it's def one of those lol) and I'm totally of the same opinion as you... if you can't see my bum then so what???
I love the way you wear that top as a dress! Beautiful color!
ReplyDeletecolormenana.blogspot.com
Yayyy you went for the brown brogues, I bought them too :)
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely love the dress and the balloon sleeves, may have to have a nosey at it when I'm next in town!
You look gorgeous as always :)
xx
tunic or dress - either way, it's cute on you! <3 I love wearing leggings, they're like second skin (so comfy) and can be worn in countless ways!
ReplyDeleteI'm 5'2, I wear most things as a dress! Never had anyone say anything bad! x
ReplyDeleteI love your shoes! Great!
ReplyDeletexoxo
I always wear tops as dresses, I'm the same height so they're always a bit too long for me. As long as you can't see my bum then I'm happy to wear leggings and tights with them.
ReplyDeleteI've never had a problem with dresses though, maybe it's just luck that they're the right length :) xx
Ahh you looked good in it! And i wouldn't of said it was a top! I'd wear it as a dress :) Im 5ft4 so i know exactly what you mean!
ReplyDeleteAnother lovely colour on you! xo
Top/ dress/ whatever. Where it however you want, ignore them.
ReplyDeleteIt might just be me being dim, but have you put where your necklace is from? It is beautiful.
Lol I'm 175 and i wear tunics as dresses too when they're long enough. Love the one you're wearing here! <3
ReplyDeleteI almost bought those brogues in Primark. Wish i had now!
ReplyDeleteTat top/dress is Definitely a tunic, no mistaking! i hate when i see girls who love having their camel toe out, my boyfriend sister is the WORST its really gross! x
ReplyDeleteOkay that post the other day? DEFINITELY A DRESS. People need to mind their business anyway. This is YOUR PERSONAL STYLE blog and they're really in no position to comment on the way you dress. I love your style Lily, you're gorgeous!!
ReplyDeleteI am 5ft 8 so never can wear a tunic as a dress. I think your lucky that you have the option, as there are so many cute tunics!!
ReplyDeleteCor some people eh? :P
ReplyDeleteI'm petite 5ft1 and wear long tops as dresses and I just call them dresses...because to me it's a dress lol.
When I first saw 'coat: primark' I was thinking 'right, I'm going to search for this coat' but then I got up to '£1' and realised it wouldn't be available anymore XD but lucky you on grabbing such a bargin!!
Love your dress too! xx
I never understand why some girls where leggings with a short shirt; its really weird to see.
ReplyDeleteThat dress is a great colour against your complexion. Those sleeves are gorgeous!

ooh-ing and aaah-ing at those shoes for the last 2 mins,
ReplyDeleteohemgee, there primark, :D!
Love thisss, :)))

Ohhh I walked past this in the window display today! I'm pretty sure we are style twins, I love/have everything you do! Also the half-tint glasses I've had bookmarked for a while but you have to pay double the price just to get it shipped here :/ I may still get them though xx
ReplyDeleteTunics as dresses seems to be fairly standard fair I'd say...but then depends on the cut of the tunic. Leggings aren't trousers...some girl with the tightest leggings the other day in the library...wanted to claw my eyes out....or at least hand her a skirt.
ReplyDeleteThe necklace...I heavy enjoy it. x
My golden rule is: lift your arms, now does your bum show? if yes = too short, if no = acceptable (;
ReplyDeletethat looks so pretty! do wear it in 10?
ReplyDeleteLove your brogues and your blazer, you're so stylish lady.
ReplyDeletebig kiss from: www.collagevintage.com
I just want to put you in my pocket, you're so petite and cute :-P I so get where you're coming from with the whole 'leggings as trousers' thing though. I wouldn't dare wear leggings with a top that didn't cover my bum, I'd be scared of people seeing my knickers! I love the brogues!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you're really busy! but could you check out my blog? http://noirnouvelle.blogspot.com/ doesn't matter if you can't! :-)
I'm 5'3 so I totally know where youre coming from gal! I can never wear leggings, jeggins, trousers or whateverz at the 'normal' length, its gotta be petite or I'm rolling them up like a sailor! You look bloody brilliant as always Lily :) x
ReplyDeleteI love this outfit! I pretty much live in dress/long tops & leggings since I've put on weight. I'm 5ft 11 so most things are too short for me anyway. So on me they look a lot shorter, without leggings it would be pretty grim to see, lol
ReplyDeletexx
I've been looking for sunnies half-shaded like that for SO long! Love em.
ReplyDeleteLove the nail varnish!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.londontownsagogo.blogspot.com/
Love this outfit, as always!
ReplyDeleteI always wear tops as dresses, I just prefer the fit that way.
Your posts always make me want to go shopping =) x
Loving the oxfords and the nailpolish!!
ReplyDeletewww.rachaeldiab.blogspot.com
Great outfit ! LOVE the dress!
ReplyDeletei have the black brogues, they're really nice (:
ReplyDeletei love this outfit and am so jealous of the £1 coat!
xoxo
I don't like tights with short dresses/tunics but leggings are definately okay - but not as trousers D:
ReplyDeleteI loved those brogues but they look huge on me so I returned them :(
I need those sunglasses! And so many girls at my college wear leggings as trousers.
ReplyDeletexx
90% of my outfits are leggings and long tops. I wouldnt dream of wearing leggings as trousers though! I wouldnt put anyone through that pain- I cringe everytime I see it. I love that dress (or should I say tunic?) Its such a wonderful colour for this time of year! Makes me all excited for christmas! :) xx
ReplyDeletei have the same issue of being small-ish, so tunics are perfect dresses for me!
ReplyDeletespecially in topshop. if i'm browsing online for a dress i'll skip straight to the 'tunic' section before i can fall in love with any 'dresses' which would swamp me :)
anyways, beautiful colours and i want your sunglasses.
xoxo
Love the dress, wish I could pull off those shoes! xx
ReplyDeleteI always wear tunics/tops with leggings or tights, if things are too far down the leg it just drowns me too & looks ridic.
ReplyDeleteAs long as the ass is covered that's all that matters! xx
I wear long tops as dresses all the time....i agree that leggings as trousers is wrong. One of my friends literally lives in leggings - its weird seeing her without them.
ReplyDeleteI have the black version of them brogues which I love...going to maybe buy the tan version tomorrow as ive got so many comments on my black pair.
I believe that some people should never wear leggings as trousers! On some people it looks extrememly wrong! I once saw a plus size woman wearing PVC leggings with a crop top. Her belly was hanging over the waistband. Now, fair enough if you are confident but sometimes it is best to cover up. No intention of insulting annoying, just incase I have.

That dress is fab.
ReplyDeleteThe jacket is the bargin of the century.
And like I said before you could rock a sake lily Melrose. I'm really bummed they don't have that dress online but I will post my pictures of it and forward you the link.
And to 'The Hater' grow up and leave Lily alone, go get a life!
I think that everyone should be able to wear what they want,I wear tunics as dresses to and like you I always wear tights.
I think if someone what's to wear something with there bum hanging out, that's up to them. We have very little freedom in a so called western country (England), I think what makes for great street style is taking a chance, you can't get it right every time.
I see a lot of wrong things but some times wrong fashion can lead and inspire great fashion.
Great post xxx
Oh dear I should be arrested some days for how close I tread the too-short line! I'm always forgetting and bending over at work and my colleagues going arrrghhh ! but at the end of the day they never see more than my leggings or very thick black tights for a split second!
ReplyDeleteOoh I have those boots in brown but I got mine from misguided, they are so beautiful and look a lot more expensive than they are too which is always good! x

i wear long tops/tunics ALL the time with leggings and subscribe to a similiar rule about no bum cheeks showing! x
ReplyDeletegetoutofbedanddressed.blogspot.com
i'm 5'0" so imagine the pain it is when EVERYTHING is long on me! sleeves, dresses! haha i fold up a lot of my jackets because the sleeves are like a whole hand longer than my arm.
ReplyDeleteawesome sunglasses!!!
i love your nail color.
ReplyDeleteI definately do the same with tunics and I am really petite! always with leggings and skinny jeans, I also can't buy over half the tunics/dresses I like as too long! Only solution is to hem them up yourself!
ReplyDeletecute outfit, as always, and do i spot an alexisonfire reference? yay!
ReplyDeleteI like so much your shoes....and the colour of the dress also GREAT!
ReplyDeleteI think long tops/ tunics with leggings and sometimes even thick tight is fine. I agree as long as it covers your bum then you're good. I have an honest despise for people wearing leggings as pants, especially jeggings or light coloured leggings, ugh.
ReplyDeleteanyway, im in love with that dress, the colour and the lace are perfect.
it is such a great colour. you have great legs, so short things work really well on you!!
ReplyDeletenice shoes!
ReplyDeletei wear tunics/long tops with leggings all the time! it's perfectly fine in my opinion (:,xxx
ReplyDeleteI´m deeply in love with your shoes <3
ReplyDeleteI love this outfit. So unique and so cheap.

Aww, you're as cute as a button! There's nothing wrong with wearing tops/tunics as dresses! I'm 5'1" so most of my "dresses" are in fact tunics. And when you look as adorable as you do in this outfit, it really doesn't matter what the haters say!

Really like the wintery berry colour of the dress, and the length looks perfect on you. I'm only 5'6" so not exactly major tall, and have found that a huge amount of the dresses around the last season or so have been waaaay too short on me, almost to a point of indecency. That said, I'm quite a fan of leggings under dresses anyway, so in some cases it's not so bad, as long as it covers your bum lol
ReplyDeleteYou do have a lovely style :)
That top (dress?) is lovely on you! I love how it looks with the jacket but its cute on its own too. The berry color is stunning. xo

i recently found this blog, and ive been back everyday. x
ReplyDeleteHoly followers girl!!
ReplyDeleteYou have an awesome blog here, great posts! Love the faux fur collection of photos!
The sunglasses + the nailvarnish = ♥
ReplyDeletewww.madeupbyhannah.blogspot.com
i LOVE the tunic, i neeeeeeed it x
ReplyDeleteHi lily :)
ReplyDeleteI find the same thing for me, I always wear tops as dresses and have to shorten hems. I generally go with the rule that if my tights are thick and the top/dress covers my bum I'm good to go! With floaty things I always stick a bodycon dress under it or cycling shorts, and really, if we're comfortable, no-one else should give a fuck!
Anyway, referring to you mentioning people around you that wear leggings as trousers, I thought I'd link you to a post I did about this. I hope you enjoy it ;)
A Fashion Rule That Under No Circumstances Should Ever Be Broken.
Hahaha 'camel toe' is a big no-no I agree. But, you look lovely and camel toe free!
ReplyDeleteYour style is amazing mate, you always look immense whatever you wear.

P.S I loooove that teeny tiny telescope necklace too.
ReplyDeletealso, I've got a major theory going that the fatter and more unfortunately-shaped you are, the more likely you are to wear jeggings/leggings as trousers. WHY IS THIS? IT BURNS MY EYES
ReplyDeleteYou should really feel sorry for me then;
ReplyDeleteSometimes I think I am the only one with any style in my year!
I pretty much get bullied just because I am fashionable and dont wear the favourite combo of uggs, soulcal hoodies and leggings'jeggings
:/
xxx
I love this outfit! :)
ReplyDeleteI really hate the idea of wearing tops as dresses - to me the clue is in the name; tops.
ReplyDeleteI am 5"4 and find that most dresses on the highstreet are indecently short so we must shop in different places?!
I love the colour of that top - it really suits you. The rust orange tunic from topshop is beyond gorgeous as well!
www.anygirlfriday.com
sometimes it just takes some getting used to longer lengths. Just play with proportions, like wear a belt and a cropped jacket with a longer dress, that way you won't feel/look dumpy.
ReplyDeleteofcourse you look gorgeous as always :)
so so so prettyy..xx
ReplyDeletelove ur dress!!!! now i need to pop in DP! lol
ReplyDeletexoxo jenna
I tried those brouges on in primark on tuesday i put them back now i want them, have to go back and get them now.nice dress. you have also made me a fan of zara taylor necklaces too! Gem xx
ReplyDeletealso wanted to ask you what false nails do you wear? and where are they from? they look so nice.x
ReplyDeleteI lovee your nail polish colour ! What is it called ?
ReplyDeletex victoria
This dress is a great color! It looks great both with the jacket (and seriously, a coat for a $1... holy jeebus) & without.
ReplyDeleteOh lily, don't you hate it when people just look at the pictures in your posts and not the actual content? HI VICTORIA! If you took the time to read the post, lily actually was kind enough to link you to the actual nail polish.
ReplyDeleteDoh.
Lovely blog!!!I follow you!

ReplyDeleteSooooooo badly want some of those half-tints, amazing...
i love the nail polish and shoes!
ReplyDeletei love the colour of the dress, and i'm gonna buy those shoes :D
ReplyDeleteJealous that's a £1 coat! Nice one. That dress is gorgeous and doesn't look too short at all to me! Sunnies are fab too.
ReplyDeleteLoving your blog by the way :) it's great x
i absolutely love this!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous dress! Aslong as your bum cheeks or lady parts are not on show I think you are ok! Don't get me started on people who wear leggings as trousers!
ReplyDeleteLove your blog :) Its nice to read blogs that are a bit personal and not just copied photos all the time, I'm going to try and do that when my uni exams are finished for good! 4 days to go.
ReplyDeleteAs for the dress - the colour looks great on you and I quite like the billowing sleeves.
Love,
British Trash
